Aviation/Aerospace
Albuquerque has long been a haven for aviation and aerospace enthusiasts, researchers, and major companies. Albuquerque's success in this arena is tied directly to Kirtland Air Force Base and the two Air Force research labs. The Directed Energy Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory is the Department of Defense's center of expertise for lasers, high-energy microwaves, and other directed energy technologies. The Space Vehicles Directorate's mission is to "develop and transition high pay-off space technologies supporting the warfighter while leveraging commercial, civil and other government capabilities to ensure America's advantage."

The major private sector companies in this field include, GE Aircraft Engines, Honeywell Defense Avionics, Aspen Avionics, DeVore Aviation, Boeing SVS, and others.

Microelectronics
Albuquerque is home to the largest semiconductor manufacturing plant in the world - Intel's factory in Rio Rancho. In addition to Intel, Albuquerque is home to SUMCO, Inc. and Xilinx.

Albuquerque continues to improve its educational resources for training production technicians, advanced manufacturing, and engineering students for microelectronics. Albuquerque's Central New Mexico Community College offers a degree in Advanced Manufacturing, with a concentration in semiconductor manufacturing.

Microsystems/Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology and Microsystems technologies involve researching, understanding, and applying technology at the molecular level - hundreds and thousands of times smaller than traditional technologies. Although these technologies have not yet established themselves as an "industry", Albuquerque is certainly a recognized center of research excellence in this field.

Several of the top researchers in this field, including the person who coined the term "MEM's", work for various organizations in Albuquerque.

  • The University of New Mexico has established an endowed chair of Microsystems at the university - proving their commitment to the technology.
  • Central NM Community College (formerly TVI) created a curriculum to train technicians in the field of Microsystems and Micromachining.
  • New Mexico was ranked 4th on Top 10 Small Tech Hot Spots by Smalltimes magazine - October 2006.

Renewable Energy
For world-class technology, talent and resources, Albuquerque is uniquely positioned. Albuquerque's geographic location in the sunny Southwest makes it a great fit for solar manufacturing companies. New Mexico is ranked 2nd in the country for solar potential and 12th for wind resources.

The metro area is home to SCHOTT Solar, Unirac, Array Technologies, SkyFuel, Signet Solar, and more.
