The Albuquerque metro labor market has a sizable and productive workforce.  With a population of over 840,000 and a seasonally adjusted working population of more than 409,000, Albuquerque’s employment accounts for nearly 47% of the State of New Mexico’s total employment. Through May 2008, Albuquerque’s non-agricultural employment grew 0.5% over the year.

Albuquerque has a steady supply of new talent within the workforce because of a large student population created by the University of New Mexico, Central New Mexico Community College (formerly TVI), and the Albuquerque Public School District.

New Mexico is a non-right to work state, but maintains a low level of union participation in the private sector.  Less than 12% of Albuquerque’s workforce is unionized. 

Workforce Development

Albuquerque’s Central NM Community College (CNM) specializes in customized training programs to meet company needs.  CNM's Workforce Training Center is located in a new facility that provides video conferencing capability, a high-bay area for large manufacturing equipment, computer training rooms, and available instructors for industry to use as a resource for developing and implementing a training curriculum. 

CNM also offers a two-year program dedicated to Advanced Manufacturing that provides a steady supply of trained personnel for local manufacturing companies.  CNM is on the leading edge of continuing education and industrial training with programs focused in the microelectronics industry for the local semiconductor industry and a new program dedicated to training microsystems technicians.
